Barcelona Tapas
![]() Tapas is one of the most versatile foods in the world. Some are cold, hot, and as varied as there are chefs on the planet. What could be more pleasant to walk through a city in Spain and visit the many tapas bars! Tapas have evolved over time since when they were just slices of bread used to cover containers to prevent insects from falling into the jars and the bartenders began to include primarily small savory snacks to entice more demand. Although their history may have originated in the thirteenth century, legend has it that during the reign of Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain, due to increased incidents caused on the roads near bars because of the large amount of beer and wine drunk, bartenders were forced to serve wine or beer mugs with a meal. This consisted of a plate with some food cold, either ham, cheese or whatever was at hand for the bartender. Customers would first eat the tapas so they could drink. This measure was intended to eliminate incidents on the road, ensuring that they came out of pubs less drunk. Little surprise, is not it? Alcohol and cars have never been good companions. ![]() But enough of history. Let's start with our theme: it was a holiday and we thought about doing something out of the ordinary. The heat was arriving in Vallarta and we were looking for a breezy place that serves something as refreshing as sangria. Thus we arrived at Barcelona Tapas at noon. He immediately ordered half a pitcher of red wine sangria; refreshing and delicious. Alioli potatoes arrived at our table; delicious and compliments of the house. Now, more relaxed, we looked over the menu offering soups, salads, hot and cold tapas and other specialties such as paella. We began ordering, Greek salad served with mixed greens, feta cheese, cucumber, red onion, tomato and black olives; very fresh and tasty. After the salad, we ordered several tapas at once: for cold items we ordered the cured ham, cheese, toast, tomatoes with olive oil, and I needn't elaborate further, just say it was very good throughout. A hot tapas Portobello mushroom and grilled mushrooms made with sausage, garlic, crushed chili, olive oil and saffron sauce; spicy and delicious. Another hot tapas was zucchini eggplant with mozzarella, goat cheese and Parmesan cheese, dipped in homemade tomato sauce. All really delicious. The service is very attentive, friendly and knowledgeable in their trade which helps the guests to enjoy the experience. And for the grand finale, we ordered the house flan; creamy and smooth. It had been a long time since we'd tasted one so good, along with Espresso. We hope to return soon because there were many "platillos" to try while enjoying the magnificent view of the bay.
